The Magic Forest: an exhibition by The House Group
The Magic Forest is a themed exhibition featuring works in a variety of media, drawing on ideas from myth and history, and including interactive elements.
The centrepiece of the exhibition will be a giant, hollow tree trunk in the centre of the gallery and appearing to grow through the ceiling. Inside will be a “Babes in the Wood” area, with a ‘leaf’ blanket under which children can hide and play.
Artworks will include large photographs of woodland scenes printed onto canvas, printmaking using natural materials such as leafs, twigs and lichen, and mixed media works. A leaf curtain made from pressed and preserved leaves will also be displayed, while a time-lapse film of trees will play to the accompaniment of woodland sounds.
In addition, there will be works of art produced in some of the outreach projects with which The House Group have been involved:
Fir Woods: an education project involving local primary schools and communities, creating woollen sculptures to be exhibited along the coast path beneath Overbecks. This will build on a week of activities organised by the National Trust, focusing on local woods and their importance to the environment, with a day of creative activity at several local primary schools.
Woodland Tales: an environmental-themed art project exploring fairytales and storytelling in woodland near Washbrook Farm.
The National Trust, the Devon Wildlife Trust, and Moor Trees will provide different activities in the gallery for visitors to engage with, and Moor Trees will supply saplings so that visitors can take home a little piece of the Magic Forest.
Rod Birtles’ photography explores various themes. Tree People is a series of portraits of individuals closely connected with trees: sculptors, tree-surgeons, landowners. Other photographs depict trees and forests in the landscape.
Alison Theaker will show multi-media, print and collage works on the theme of trees and forests, featuring natural materials.
