Brahms' Clarinet Quintet
Jean Johnson clarinet
Judith Weir String Quartet
Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op.115
‘A sense of freedom and flair... bounding with energy and purposeful intent.’ The Scotsman
The brilliant young clarinetist Jean Johnson has been a guest principal with the Bergen Philharmonic, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, and the Scottish Ballet Orchestra. She has also worked as a chamber musician with numerous chamber groups such as the Paragon Ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble, Mr. McFalls Chamber Orchestra. Re-igniting her relationship with the Heath Quartet – they performed Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet last year in Dartington- she performs Brahms’ nostalgically romantic Clarinet Quintet in B Minor of 1891, a late, post-retirement work haunted from start to finish by the genial ghost of Mozart. The concert opens with Judith Weir’s brief string quartet (1990), based on song fragments from medieval Spain and Scotland.
