Huddersfield's Big Masala Tea Party

Huddersfield's Big Masala Tea Party

Chol Theatre applied to Big Lottery’s Celebrate Fund, and fortunately the application was a success. Hooray! We have received £8,871 to present our brand new community theatre event ‘Huddersfield’s Big Masala Tea Party.’ This commemoration event celebrates 70 years of Indian Independence and the creation of Pakistan, as well as commemorates Partition. The event will be held on Saturday, 12th August. Chol is working in partnership with Let’s Go Yorkshire and other community organisations to transform part of St George’s Square into a large tea party event, presented and animated through artists, workshops, music and dance.

Huddersfield-based artist and producer Mandy Samra is working with Chol on the event and she is very passionate about this period of time, “this is a very special event as the partition of India dramatically shaped the lives of South Asian migrants who settled in Huddersfield. It affected both my parents and grandparents who had to leave their homes in West Punjab when the news broke out in August 1947. I believe this event will be a great way of celebrating the diversity of our town, particularly at a time when Britain is experiencing increased tension between people of different faiths and is becoming more divided as it becomes more diverse. This event will encourage a more positive appreciation of what makes Yorkshire so welcoming and open” she explains.

Susan Burns, Chol’s Creative Producer adds, “we are delighted to have received this award and we have many interesting and exciting plans afoot for this celebration. We are continuing to raise money to involve as many people in the community as possible, so if there any potential sponsors out there, please do get in touch. I look forward to seeing everyone at the event in August.”
