Maritime Shortcuts - mini-canals across the SW peninsular

Maritime Shortcuts - mini-canals across the SW peninsular

This ilustrated talk is a repeat of an earlier talk given earlier this year at Torquay Museum and Exeter Cathedral.

The talk aims to promote awareness of certain of our Westcountry canals and the work of the societies and organisations preserving them for future generations.

The talk focuses on four attempts to dig canal routes across the SW peninsular, one of those being the Grand Western Canal which celebrates the bi-centenary of its first full year of operation in 2015.

An over view of the four local canals is followed by a reminder of two famous internationally important "Maritime Shortcuts” – The Suez Canal and the Panama Canal, both of which are to re-open this year with faciliities for the next generation of super-size commercial shipping.

The presentation concludes with a stunning four minute time-lapse journey through one of the canals, but which one? You will have to come to the talk to find out.

Both these latter two canals have newly cut sections the Suez Canal was reopened in 2015 and the new Panama Canal section in 2016.
