Candle and Bell

Candle and Bell

Sophie Bullock / Stu Burke /Cheryl Garner & Gavin Jones / Cherry Kino / Gemma Mountain / Alli Sharma

Curated by Becky Gee

Candle & Bell is an exhibition of art works which individually relate visually or conceptually to cinema whilst celebrating both the artist film and the everyday cinematic experience. The art works make reference to the architecture of the exhibition space, which was originally built as a cinema in 1939. Although this fact isn’t visually clear, the unusual shapes, the monumental stature – not to mention the stories – echo the place’s filmic past. The exhibition aims to cast light upon our fascination with the moving picture. Film is represented through new media but also through more traditional methods in order to explore the versatile nature in which we can become involved with the moving image.

In the main gallery space there are art works which celebrate and challenge the way we view film. Sculptural work by Stu Burke, film projection by Cheryl Garner & Gavin Jones and paintings by Ally Sharma were all made especially for Candle & Bell. Gemma Mountain’s photographs celebrate the architecture of local independent cinemas whilst Cherry Kino’s film work expresses the attraction that is often felt towards moving image. In the ground floor gallery space Sophie Bullock explores the dream-like narrative she associates with film through projection and installation. The combination of these works provides a variety of interpretation around cinema and the artist film, exposing the iconic features and illuminating on our mutual fascination.

Keep an eye out for updates on events and workshops including a Super 8 Film workshop by Cherry Kino!
