Child Art Revolution Revisited

Child Art Revolution Revisited

Child Art Revolution, Revisited
15 October to 21 November 2015
Artwork from the Barclay-Russell Memorial Collection, on loan from the National Arts Education Archive at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Alexander Barclay Russell was a brilliant if modest man and strangely little known outside a small circle, but his thinking on the development of the individual through art education has had a wide-ranging effect especially on the theories of art and the adolescent which was the subject of a paper he wrote for the Bristol UNESCO Symposium in 1951.

He wrote:
It is desirable for the teacher to recognise, understand and know how to help with differing modes of expression as he finds them appearingin embryo in the work of his pupils. All too often, even where fine, free
painting is produced in a classroom, it is all of one kind, approximating to the teachers' own suggestions. Such work will only continue as long as the teacher is present.

Where expression is allowed to develop organically from the artist's individual sensibility and experience, the technique proper for this particular form and for this type of artist will be found to exist and will develop steadily with the quality of expression, and will be fully adequate for it."

Text written/cited by Derek Pope in the 1983 catalogue for Child Art Revolution 1930-1960

The Barclay-Russell Collection is complemented by a selection of artwork created by young artists at the Hub over the past three years.
