Heritage Open Weekend @ The Hub

Artists from Mirfield’s Creative Arts Hub are offering a range of free workshops and drop-in demonstrations over the coming weekend (12th & 13th September) as part of the annual Heritage Open Week celebrations. The former Vale Cinema, converted in 2012 for use as a gallery and artists’ studio base, opens its doors at the weekend to enable visitors to take a look around the studio spaces and see how the building has changed in recent years.

From 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, the arts centre will be offering plenty to see and do, with a wide range of activities suitable for all ages. Artist & Hub Director Mark Milnes will offer a freeabstract painting and sculpture sessions over the two days, suitable for ages 5 and upwards. For those with an interest in textiles, both Juko Designs and handweaver Janet Clark will be demonstrating weaving techniques, whilst. Andrew Stone of Black Orchard Bespoke Leather will be showcase lether tooling techniques as he creates work commissioned by his clients. Painters and long-term Hub artists Ian Clegg Walsh and Richard Yeomans will have their studio doors open to offer visitors a chance to see their latest masterpieces.

Aimed at younger visitors, free activities with a cinematic theme will take place continuously throughout the weekend, and they can also complete an activity sheet at the gallery to win themselves a sweet treat. And over the course of the weekend, young artist Lucy Chisholm (7) will be holding a tabletop toy sale to raise funds Syrian Refugees

All of the activities will run alongside an exhibition of artwork by Creative Arts Hub studio holders, which includes jewellery, costume, painting, sculpture, textiles, printmaking and more – including work by new artists John Paul Richards and Louise Elizabeth, both of whom have recently taken up studio spaces at the Hub. Hub Director Mark Milnes says “it’s a very timely event for us – having been here for nearly three years, it’s an opportunity to celebrate what we have achieved and to look ahead to the future, as we sit on the verge of signing a new contract to remain at the Vale for further five years.”
