Coombe Dean School, Plymouth
The construction of a low energy, contemporary new building to house six new classrooms and refurbishment of an existing building to provide new Food Technology teaching spaces and a commercial kitchen.
The new English Department has been designed as a compact, single-storey building, with six classrooms arranged around a central corridor. The aim was to design an inspiring innovative building, providing an enhanced learning environment. The school were keen to demonstrate that it was possible to create an exemplar, modern, low energy building on a low budget.
Natural ventilation and lighting have been incorporated into the design and the roof overhang and solar shading control glare and excessive solar gain. A ground source heat pump heats the building and the school are now looking at installing a wind turbine.
