Garden Time

Garden Time

An exhibition of paintings by Simon Dobbs and sculpture by Carl Hahn, representing an abstraction from the natural world in general, and from gardens in particular.

Simon Dobbs studied at St Martins School of Art, before training as an Architect and Town Planner. He took up painting full time in the 1990s, exhibiting in London and Salcombe, as well as at Harbour House, and from his own studio as part of the Devon Open Studios event.

"These paintings are of a garden, with the gardener, cats, birds, and the plants themselves. Illustrative drawings of individual flowers, animals and people familiarise the detail, while thumbnail sketches find ways to work these up into a painting. Finally, the paintings themselves result as abstractions from the original garden."

Carl Hahn is a maker and thinker whose wide-ranging interests are expressed through his sculpture and furniture.

"Landscape has always been my inspiration. First, there were pictorial abstractions applied to furniture. Then installations set within and responding to landscape, and most recently a growing interest in sculpture for the garden, made from materials harvested from the land. My work mirrors my flight path, and a growing sense of belonging and domesticity. The little willow sculptures were originally conceived as maquettes for much larger pieces. The originals stood two metres tall and were made from forks split into six, then precariously balanced to form organised self-supporting structures at the mercy of high winds, boisterous dogs and inquisitive children."
