Passing Under Pellegrino

Passing Under Pellegrino

After suffering damage during the March 31,1800 action off Valetta, HMS Foudroyant was assisted to Syracuse by HMS Lion, where repairs were carried out. HMS Foudroyant and HMS Lion are passing under Mount Pellegrino to arrive at Palermo after the repairs. Lord Nelson was to rejoin his flag ship Foudroyant to pick up and transport the Naples Royal family and Sir William and Emma Hamilton to safety. Their journey home for the most part though was overland through Europe, as Keith had refused Nelson his battle ship. After dropping the Neapolitan Royal family in Prague Nelson continued on with the Hamiltons stopping in Vienna, where they attended a performance of Haydn's new work, a Mass for Princess Maria Joseph Hemengild Esterhazy, entitled "Missa in Angustiis" translated as "Mass in time of Anguish, affliction and danger". This has now become known as "The Nelson Mass" as Nelson and Lady Hamilton attended it in September 1800. They arrived in Great Yarmouth, England, on 6 November 1800.
