The Exeter Library Live programme, presented by Exeter Central Library is very excited to bring the award-winning author Philip Marsden, to Exeter Central Library for an evening of readings, discussions and an insight into his success in historical fiction. Marsden combines his outstanding skills as a travel writer with the research talents of a first-rate sleuth to produce books which truly bring history to life and he’ll be sharing his own experiences as a traveller, writer and historian in a unique insight into his works.

Philip lives in Cornwall and many people will know him through the wonderful ‘The Levelling Sea: The story of a Cornish Haven in the Age of Sail’. (Harper Collins, 2010). Drawing on his own deep connection with Cornwall, he writes unforgettably about the power of the sea and its ability to produce greed on a piratical scale, dizzying corruption, and grand and tragic aspirations.

Philip Marsden is also the author of A Far Country: Travels in Ethiopia, The Crossing Place: Among the Armenians (which won the Somerset Maugham Award), The Bronski House, The Spirit-Wrestlers: And Other Survivors of the Russian Century (winner of the Thomas Cook Travel Book of the Year Award) and the novel The Main Cages. He is the editor of The Spectator Book of Travel Writing and is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. His work has been translated into ten languages.

This is a ‘must see’ event for anyone who enjoys delving into hidden histories, especially the rich heritage of the South West and Philip will be reading from a selection of his books.
