The Government Inspector
Probably Nikolai Gogol’s best-known and most popular work, The Government Inspector is a classic Russian comedy of errors that satirises provincial bureaucracy, small-town corruption and the nature of human greed. In this new version by Northern writer Martin Aylott the action is transferred to Underfield, a Pennine town in the 1950s. The Mayor has just got wind that a Government Inspector is about to visit the town unannounced; the eminent townsfolk conspire to identify the inspector so they can cover up the dodgy dealings and back handers have been going on between the local officials.
