Clothes Swapping Event at Plymouth College of Art

Clothes Swapping Event at Plymouth College of Art

Fashion dilemma? For those whose waistbands have grown tighter over the festive period, or received an unwanted Christmas jumper, there is a perfect opportunity to cash them in for something fresh at an annual clothes swapping event next week.

Open to the public, the event at Plymouth College of Art on Wednesday 12 January from 4.30-9pm will offer hundreds of garments from vintage dresses and coats to designer dresses and bags.

Jane Mooney, a student at the College and member of the College’s Charitable Trust said: “It’s really easy and great fun to take part. Dig out the bits and pieces you don’t want, from one or two t-shirts to several bags full, and them bring them along to exchange for tokens. Then you get to run around the rails and spend your tokens on new outfits!”

“Some people are looking for something specific, such as a dress to wear for a wedding, and some are keen to just refresh their wardrobe. All the money raised goes to the Charitable Trust and left over clothes are donated to Oxfam.”

“Swishing is set to be strong in 2011 with many people tightening their belts and a new trend for mending and making do.”

Jo Wakeham, President of the Student Union, said: “We’ve got lots of fashion students at the College so it’s always a great place for a swishing event. We have kindly been donated a selection of one-off samples of our very own students designs.”

“The art of swishing is about looking into your wardrobe and swapping things you are bored of, or can be replaced by something else that you’ll look great in. Not only that, the SU is passionate about being environmentally friendly and what better way to do some ethical shopping than at our very own swishing shop, whilst saving you money at the same time.”

The College’s Charitable Trust formed in 2006, with the objective to provide for current and ex-students in supporting their continuing education with scholarships and bursaries.
The event costs £3 to enter (£2 for students), and all proceeds go to charity. For more information about Plymouth College of Art, or to attend an Open Day, visit www.plymouthart.ac.uk or telephone 01752 203434.
