Unique Gifts for Shoppers by Design Students

Students at Plymouth College of Art are gearing up for one of their annual shows, ‘Design to Sell’, which is a chance for Christmas shoppers to buy one-off, handmade gifts.
The designer-makers behind the exhibition are all studying the National Diploma in Art, Design Fashion and Textiles.
Last year, students sold items such as bags, jewellery, ceramics, objets d’art.
This year also promises to include a wide range of gifts, from posters to metal sculptures – all with affordable price tags.
Helen Folland, 17, from Prince Rock, a student at the College, said: “This is a chance for us to show-off the skills we’ve learned so far. We’ve designed and made all these pieces from scratch, and now have the opportunity to take them to market, getting real experience of how well our designs will sell in the real world. We’re all really excited about the opening night of the exhibition, which will be a chance for our friends and family to celebrate our achievements and share a drink with us.”
The exhibition and shop opens on 1 December and runs for a week at the new Gallery at the front of the College.
The Gallery is open to the public Monday to Friday from 8.30am-9pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm during term time.
The Gallery has recently been re-launched and renamed after it had an expansion, to coincide with the building project which has been completed recently.
Curator Hannah Jones said: “The Gallery showcases work by the most exciting contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a range of different discipline areas.”
“Our programme regularly comprises of solo shows, group shows, residencies and commissions but also encompasses festivals, symposiums and conferences and aims to enrich, enhance and support the teaching and learning of the College, whilst also engaging with a wider public audience.”
The sale of work will be open as follows: 1 December 6pm – 9pm, 2-3 December - 9am – 9pm, 4 December 9am -5pm, 5 December 9.30am – 2pm.
