EGG-TEMPERA PAINTING WORKSHOP

PAINT A PYSANKA (UKRAINIAN EASTER EGG) IMAGE WITH EGG-TEMPERA IN THE FRESCO A SECCO TRADITION!

My 'Painting for Well-being' workshops run throughout the year on the first Wednesday of the month (except July when I'm on holiday!), from 2pm until 4pm, in The Wesley Centre, Almondbury Methodist Church, HD5 8XJ. All levels of experience and ability are welcome!

For my 'Painting for Well-being' workshop on Wednesday, 6th April, I'm teaching participants how to make egg-tempera paint. This is an ancient paint made from egg-yolk emulsion and fine powder pigments. Egg-tempera has been used in the 'fresco a secco' method for centuries. 'Fresco a secco' is the method of applying pigments mixed with a binder, such as an egg-yolk emulsion, to dried fresco plaster. One of the most famous fresco a secco paintings is Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’, which he painted on the dining hall wall of the Convent of Santa Maria della Gracie, Milan in 1495. You can experience the same materials Leonardo used 500 years ago! I will bring ready-made fresco tiles for you to create your own mini frescoes following the fresco a secco tradition of painting with egg-tempera paint on dried plaster.

For design inspiration and to celebrate the rich culture of Ukraine, we will look at the symbolic patterns of the pysanka, the Ukrainian decorated Easter egg, and replicate these on our tiles using our freshly-made egg-tempera paint. Our creations will be included in the Eggstravaganza Event displays of different types of eggs made by various groups in the community at All Hallows Church and Almondbury Methodist Church on Saturday, 9th April. There will be free refreshments in the Methodist Church 10am-12pm and in All Hallows Church 2-4pm so you can have a cuppa while you admire all the eggcellent creations.
