By Sam Shepard

This is a rare opportunity to see this play by Sam Shepard – now widely regarded in the USA as one of their greatest contemporary stage writers. We believe it may even be a UK premier. Set in 2007 it covers the course of one day from high noon into the night of a lunar eclipse. Commissioned by Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, and written especially for actors Sean McGinley and Stephen Rea with whom Shepard has a long standing artistic relationship, it premiered in 2009.

On the porch of a crumbling American house two men in “late middle-age” (60 is the new 40 right?) talk. But these are the senior citizens of our times, the generation of Vietnam, Easy Rider, Woodstock and Feminism. It is an energetically contemplative work from the actor, writer and erstwhile drummer of the Holy Modal Rounders, who can be heard on the Easy Rider soundtrack.

Byron has come to support his friend Ames who, following an adulterous indiscretion he can barely recall, has been exiled by his wife. The old friends sit on the porch, sip bourbon and ruminate on life, love and their decades long relationship in this sometimes laid-back, sometimes intense, funny, poignant and honest play as their candid conversation touches on friendship, sex, love, jealousy and loss. With explosive consequences.
