Legacy: Matisse and Picasso Exhibition at WYPW

Legacy: Matisse and Picasso Exhibition at WYPW

We are delighted to announce that our upcoming exhibition, beginning 29 March 2014, will present a rare collection of Matisse and Picasso lithographs from the 1950s, as produced by Parisian studio Mourlot Frères and instructed by the artists themselves.

Comprising the first part of this exhibition will be the bold and uplifting pictorial celebrations of life produced by Henri Matisse shortly before his passing. Printed as a part of Les Dernières Oeuvres de Matisse in 1958, these compositions are full of colour and laden with repeated motifs, having been conceived using his revered cut-out technique. Joining these works, and produced using the same lithographic press a short time afterwards, will be the sombre studio drawings of Pablo Picasso- an artist in mourning as he reflected upon Matisse’s eventual death. These interior studies, along with a striking set of Women of Algiers portraits, make up Picasso’s Le Carnet de la Californie series- originally published in 1959- in which Picasso paid tribute to the life and work of his deceased friend and well-respected fellow artist. The juxtaposition of these works at West Yorkshire Print Workshop hopes to not only illuminate the modern masters’ very distinct approaches to life and to loss, but also to catalyse a fascinating exploration of the long and powerful relationship that bound the two men together.
