Yuli Somme Yuli Somme, Felt Maker & Bellacouche
I source my wool locally and particularly like the rare breed varieties. I have a number of projects on the go at the moment.
Feet Felts is a sort of "direct action" of walking in wool. Wool has this wonderful ability to become felt when subjected to moisture and friction. When you walk in it you create beautiful feet felts. The first project involved 40 volunteers whose feet I dressed. The results of this event were installed on Dartmoor on Shovel Down, close to where the wool came from. I have documented it's return to nature since 22nd December 2007.
Further developments to this are a kit and an educational pack for schools now being piloted in Devon. Please get in contact if you are interested in this.
My other work is designing and making all sorts of useful felt objects; bags, tea cosies, cushions etc. This work is for my partnership, Bellacouche, with another felt maker, Anne Belgrave. We have designed a felt coffin called the Leafshroud.
